A Practice of Becoming Visible

EMBODIED PRACTICE

Before identity becomes an idea, it is lived through the body.

My performance practice uses movement, theatrical imagery and embodied experimentation to examine visibility, silence, conformity and resistance. These works emerged from an ongoing inquiry into what happens when the body is treated as something that must be corrected, interpreted or made socially acceptable.

VOICE & PERFORMANCE

What happens when the voice refuses the role assigned to it?

I also work with operatic voice and theatrical performance as spaces for questioning gendered expectations. In these experiments, repertoire, costume, vocal expression and visual presentation become part of the same inquiry.

VISUAL INQUIRY

An image can become an encounter.

I deliberately constructed this photograph as the visual presentation of Crossing the Threshold. Clothing, pose, umbrella, setting, composition and atmosphere were part of the image's construction. When the photograph circulated among people who knew me, reactions to the image became a lesson in how quickly a visual representation can influence perceptions of identity.

The experience led me to think more critically about the distance between what an image is intended to communicate and what viewers bring to it. The photograph became more than documentation of a performance. It became an encounter in its own right.

DIGITAL & SYSTEMS RESEARCH

What happens to identity after the image enters the system?

An interdisciplinary research project examining how digital platforms shape the conditions through which people present themselves, become visible and are interpreted. The project follows identity across different platform environments, asking how visibility, audience organisation, recommendation, measurement and platform governance can reshape the conditions of self-presentation.

PUBLIC INQUIRY

Making difficult questions visible through conversation.

Through Dignity Negotiation, I host conversations that bring practitioners, researchers and thinkers into public inquiry around culture, identity, power, social norms and human dignity.

BEYOND THIS SELECTION

This selection brings together the parts of my practice most closely connected to visual culture, representation, performance, research and public inquiry. My wider work extends into systems strategy, design, writing and other forms of cultural practice.
